Two Alleged 'Professional Sureties' Remanded Over False Bail for Kapila ...
By S. Subadharshini Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva on Wednesday (06) ordered the remand of two individuals until May 13 for allegedly appearing as false bail sureties for former SriLankan Airlines Executive Director Kapila Chandrasena in exchange for money. The suspects, identified as Mohamed Rizwan and Mohamed Irshan of Sanchi Arachchiwatta, were arrested by the Wolfendale Police and produced before court. Kapila Chandrasena had earlier been granted bail under three personal sureties of LKR 100 million each in connection with the high-profile case involving the alleged acceptance of a USD 2 million bribe linked to the 2013 Airbus aircraft procurement deal for SriLankan Airlines. During police questioning, the two suspects reportedly admitted that they did not personally know Chandrasena and had agreed to appear as sureties in return for payments of LKR 15,000 each. They further stated that they acted on the instructions of two individuals identified only as “Deva” and “Tissa,” adding that they had no permanent employment or steady source of income. Police informed court that, under the Bail Act, a surety must be personally acquainted with the suspect. Investigations had revealed no connection between the suspects and Chandrasena. Authorities also stated that the suspects were taken into custody after police scrutinized their Grama Niladhari certificates. The Magistrate directed police to submit a comprehensive report regarding the suspects’ backgrounds and the manner in which they obtained the Grama Niladhari certificates. Based on the evidence presented, the court ordered both suspects to be remanded until the next hearing on May 13.
