Oliviyah Edwards decommits as Tennessee roster shrinks to 1 - ESPN
playTennessee's Caldwell: 'It was the worst year of my professional career' (0:31)Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell talks about what went wrong for the Lady Vols this season after a first-round exit in the NCAA tournament. (0:31)Shane LaflinApr 6, 2026, 05:01 PM ETTennessee guard Jaida Civil announced Monday that she is entering the transfer portal, and Oliviyah Edwards, the No. 2 recruit in the SC Next 100 class of 2026, has requested a release from her national letter of intent with the Lady Volunteers, leaving the program with just one player on the roster for next season. The announcements add to the significant uncertainty surrounding the storied program, which went 16-14 this past season under second-year coach Kim Caldwell. Every player with remaining eligibility has entered the transfer portal -- including all of the highly touted, second-ranked freshmen class. Seniors Janiah Barker and Zee Spearman will be graduating, leaving the Lady Vols with just No. 62 wing Gabby Minus set to arrive for next season.A preseason top-10 team in the Associated Press poll, the Lady Vols ended this season on an eight-game losing streak, their longest in the modern era. They also lost by 30 points to UConn in February, the largest margin of victory for either team in the series and the second-worst loss in Tennessee's history. Overall, the team lost seven games by at least 15 points, the most in 40 years. The Lady Vols were a No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament but lost to NC State 76-61 in the first round. It was just the third time since 1982 that they failed to win a first-round matchup.Civil, a freshman from Vero Beach, Florida, played seven minutes in that loss to the Wolfpack on March 20. For the season, she averaged 6.4 points and 4.0 rebounds. She made her announcement in an Instagram post.Edwards, a 6-foot-3 forward from Washington, originally signed with Caldwell's program in November over offers from USC, South Carolina, LSU, Florida and Washington. At the time, Edwards, named a McDonald's All American this season, was the highest-ranked recruit to sign under Caldwell and Tennessee's top signee since then-No. 2 Jordan Horston in 2019."As a family, we are so thankful to the University of Tennessee for the time that was spent recruiting Oliviyah," Jordan West, Edwards' mother, told ESPN. "At this time, with all the current changes to the women's basketball team, I believe it's in my daughter's best interest to part ways and reopen her recruitment."Prior to Edwards'...
Oliviyah Edwards to seek release from Tennessee - 247Sports
Oliviyah "Big Oh" Edwards (Photo: McDonald's All-American Games)Class of 2026 recruit Oliviyah "Big Oh" Edwards has asked to be released from Tennessee after signing with the Lady Vols last fall.Edwards, a consensus top five national recruit and McDonald's All-American, had committed on her visit in September, but the team and staff have changed significantly since that time. After an eight-game losing streak to end the season and seven of eight players with eligibility remaining declaring the intent to enter the portal, the roster in 2026-27 will be very different. Two coaches also have departed Tennessee in Gabe Lazo and Roman Tubner. Lazo was hired earlier this week to be an assistant coach at LSU but then became the head coach at UCF when that position came open.Edwards, 6-4 forward from Seattle, Washington, lit up the McDonald's All-American scene in the dunk contest and won the one-on-one competition. The adidas-signed player, once the paperwork is completed, can be recruited by other schools and will have plenty of suitors.Edwards list of top 10 schools while being recruited included Duke, Florida, Florida State, LSU, North Carolina, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Washington and USC.The other 2026 recruit is Gabby Minus, a 6-0 guard from Dacula, Georgia who hasn't indicated her intentions yet.Coach Kim Caldwell has hired Brian Ferrara from Florida State where he played a big role in the Seminoles' fast-paced offense and high-scoring games. She also will need to select a replacement for Tubner.Caldwell and her staff will have to replenish the roster from the transfer portal and find players willing to play at a fast clip on offense and bring constant pressure. The 2025-26 team ended with a 16-14 record and eight consecutive losses – six in the regular season and two in the SEC and NCAA tourneys. Effort, cohesive play and chemistry among players and staff dwindled throughout the month of February, when the notion of an exodus of players and coaching changes shifted from possible to highly likely. The loss of Edwards is significant but also an understandable decision for a high school senior about to embark on her college basketball career. The team Edwards signed with last fall became a shell of itself this spring. Perhaps, given how the season ended, an overhaul needed to happen with the Tennessee roster. The portal taketh, but it also giveth. The Lady Vols will now have to reset and start from nearly scratch.
