[Image credit: Reuters]Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that his government will formally request the European Union to suspend its association agreement with the state of Israel—an appropriate legal and institutional framework for political dialogue and economic cooperation between the EU and Israel—due to concerns over violations of international law and human rights obligations. Addressing a political rally, PM Sanchez stated Israel ‘cannot be a partner’ of the EU under such conditions of human rights violations and urged other European nations to support the move. The proposal originated following months of rising diplomatic tension between Spain and Israel, mostly because of the war in Gaza and Israeli military actions in Lebanon. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, has said that Spain is hostile, while Gideon Saar, the Foreign Minister of Israel, has called Spain's criticism hypocritical.Spain is not the only nation to support such an action. Other countries such as Ireland, Belgium, Slovenia, Finland, France and Sweden have shown varying levels of support for reviewing or suspending the agreement with Israel. However, countries such as Germany, Croatia and Italy have opposed this action, making consensus difficult.Beyond European state governments, more than 60 humanitarian groups, trade unions, and human rights groups have also requested the EU put the deal on hold. These groups urge the EU to halt trade with Israeli settlements and stop arms transfers, among other things.
