Protest to be held in Colombo to pressure govt. to rectify pension ...

Share Tweet A coalition of retired public servants is set to stage a peaceful protest in Colombo tomorrow (28), escalating pressure on authorities over what they describe as pension anomalies. The demonstration, organised by the Western Province Government Retiree’s Alliance, is scheduled to commence at 10 am near Galle Face Green. According to Coordinating Secretary DKS Ravindra, nearly 154,000 public servants, who retired between 2020 and 2024, have been adversely affected by pension anomalies stemming from provisions in the 2025 Budget. He claimed the group had been rendered “victims” of a widening salary and pension gap. Alliance representatives said repeated attempts to secure administrative or policy remedies had failed, prompting the decision to mobilise. They described the disparity as historically significant and warned that the protest would mark the beginning of a sustained campaign of trade union-style action if a resolution is not forthcoming. The Alliance, which draws members from the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts, is calling on the Government to address the issue in the 2027 Budget and ensure, what it terms,”financial justice” for retired state employees. Ravindra said that the demonstration would be peaceful, framing it as a necessary step to safeguard the dignity and economic security of the retired public service community.
