Mayor Evans addresses presence of ICE agents - Spectrum News
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans is responding to what he says were alleged reports of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence in the area over the weekend. Evans says he hasn't received any information about the outcome of the situation. It comes as the Trump administration steps up immigration enforcement across the country. Evans says the federal agency has operated in the region in the past, but does not alert or coordinate with local governments about their activities. Mayor Evans addressed the situation in statement, saying in part: "I recognize there is a degree of fear and concern being caused by the current rhetoric around immigration enforcement, and encourage refugees and immigrants living in the Greater Rochester area to be fully aware of their rights. The city of Rochester will work closely with our partners at the local, regional and state levels, and will share information as soon as we receive it." Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello said in a statement Monday that the RPD does not have the legal authority to enforce civil immigration detainers and that he has no information on any actions or potential actions taken by federal agencies in the city.
