By Paneetha Ameresekere Sri Lanka received the seventh highest tourist arrivals for any year for the calendar month in April 2026 spanning a 13 calendar year period only, according to available official statistics, when it entertained a total of 135,643 tourists last month (April 2026), Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) statistics released on Monday (4) showed. The highest to the seventh highest tourist arrivals that Sri Lanka has thus far received in descending order for any year in the month of April in the 13-year review period are April 2018-180,429, April 2025-174,608, April 2019-166,975, April 2017-160,249, April 2024-148,867, April 2016-136,367 and April 2026-135,643, respectively. However, in the first four months of this year, with a cumulative tourist arrival number of 876,277 that number is the fourth highest tourist arrival figure for the four months of any calendar year in the 13-year review period that the island has thus far entertained, official statistics further showed. The highest to the seventh highest cumulative tourist arrival number for the four months of any calendar year that the country has thus far entertained in the review period has been 2019-907,575 tourist arrivals, 2025-896,884 tourist arrivals, 2018-888,353, 2026-876,277 tourist arrivals, 2024-784,651 tourist arrivals, 2017-765,202 and 2016-721,185 tourist arrivals, respectively. Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) statistics showed that last year, tourism earnings was Sri Lanka’s third largest foreign exchange earner, only behind remittances and garments and textiles exports, in that respective descending order.

Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals surpass 900,000 so far this year
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) reports that more than 900,000 tourists have visited Sri Lanka so far this year. According to the Authority, a total of 904,855 tourist arrivals were recorded between January 1 and May 6. The majority of these visitors were Indian nationals, accounting for 200,796 arrivals.
