National War Heroes' Day Ceremony to be held on May 19
The National War Heroes’ Day commemoration will take place on May 19 at 3:00 pm at the War Heroes’ Memorial in Battaramulla under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Announcing the arrangements at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today (14), Brigadier (Retired) S.B. Kohona, Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, said the annual ceremony honours war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and independence. He noted that, while the commemoration will follow traditional practices, several special changes have been introduced this year. The event will provide greater opportunity for participation by war heroes and family members of those who laid down their lives. Tamil and Muslim war heroes from the Northern and Eastern provinces, along with their families, have also been invited to join. Ranaviru Seva Authority Director L.M.C.B. Nishshanka said 2,769 people are expected to attend, including members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Special Task Force, Civil Security Department, National Cadet Corps, Ranaviru Seva Authority, and parents of war heroes. He added that 160 parents of fallen war heroes will be given the opportunity, alongside special guests, to visit the memorial and offer floral tributes. (Newswire) 2026-05-14
