Navy rescues injured fisherman from deep sea off southern coast
The Sri Lanka Navy brought ashore an injured fisherman from deep sea waters south of Sri Lanka and rushed him for urgent medical treatment. The rescue operation was coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo after a request for assistance was made by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The fisherman was aboard the multi-day trawler Hasitha Putha 4, which had departed from Tangalle Fisheries Harbour with six crew members. While carrying out fishing operations around 45 nautical miles south of Sri Lanka, one crew member reportedly suffered a serious fracture to his arm. Following the alert, the Navy dispatched a vessel attached to the Southern Naval Command to the area. Naval personnel provided first aid before transporting the injured fisherman to Hambantota Port. He was later admitted to the Hambantota District General Hospital for further treatment. The Navy said it remains on standby to respond to maritime emergencies within Sri Lanka’s search and rescue region. (Newswire) 2026-04-26
