Sri Lanka marked a significant milestone in its events and tourism landscape with the launch of its first-ever national event calendar in Colombo yesterday (23), under the patronage of Sunil Handunnetti. The newly introduced “Sri Lanka Events Calendar” has been developed by the Event Management Advisory Board with guidance from the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, bringing together major events scheduled to take place across the country. The initiative is aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s expanding event management sector, which was valued at approximately Rs. 60 billion in 2025. Officials say the calendar will serve as an official guide for both local and international events, featuring cultural festivals, sports events, conferences, exhibitions, and high-level meetings. The move is also expected to support tourism promotion and industrial development by offering a centralized platform for event planning and visibility. Speaking at the launch, Minister Handunnetti highlighted Sri Lanka’s strategic geographical location as a major advantage for the sector. He stated that the government is committed to providing the necessary support to help the industry expand, attract foreign exchange, and create employment opportunities, with the long-term vision of establishing the country as a regional hub for event management. Adding to the initiative, a Diploma in International Event Management and Marketing was also introduced to provide structured education and professional training for industry personnel and newcomers seeking to enter the field. The launch event was attended by Chathuranga Abeysinghe, senior government officials, and representatives from the event management industry, marking what officials described as a new chapter for the country’s service and tourism sectors.
