Share Tweet The government has announced that 05 forests located in the Anuradhapura district, have been declared as protected reserves in line with the World Environment Day, which falls on June 05. Speaking at a media briefing held today (May 25), Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Patabendi stated that the forests of Ritigala, Aliyawetuna Wewa, Bulagala, Konketiyawa and Kallanchiya have been declared reserves in this manner and cover a total extent of 2,169 hectares. He also stated that measures are also underway to designate the ‘Moolagiya Ulpath’ springs in the Anuradhapura district. This year’s global theme for World Environment Day is “Global Call for Climate Action.” The Minister stated that Sri Lanka’s national theme, adapted from the global concept, will be “Let It Sprout – Let Us Mobilize to Mitigate Climate Change.” He also announced that the National Environment Week will be observed islandwide from May 30 – June 05 in conjunction with World Environment Day. Noting that 248 butterfly species have been recorded in Sri Lanka, including 31 endemic species, Dr. Rajapaksa said that around 60 butterfly species have been identified within the butterfly garden area at the Ridiyagama Safari Park.He also noted that a new free-flight aviary was opened at the safari park last month, allowing both local and foreign bird species to live in a natural environment. Visitors will be able to observe birds moving freely instead of being confined to cages, he said.
