Increase in rainfall expected in coming day - Sri Lanka Mirror - Right ...
Duty Meteorologist at the Department of Meteorology, Malith Fernando, says rainfall is expected to increase over the next few days. He made these remarks while addressing a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today (10) to raise awareness regarding upcoming weather conditions. He stated that rainfall experienced over the past few days is expected to continue in the coming days, and that the existing atmospheric disturbance in the lower atmosphere could develop into a low-pressure area by tomorrow (11). He further pointed out that the prevailing conditions are not monsoonal but rather pre-monsoonal in nature, adding that following the development of the low-pressure area, monsoon conditions and related weather changes are likely to emerge by around 20 May. “Previously affected landslide areas could become active again” – NBRO Meanwhile, Senior Geologist at the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), Wasantha Senadheera, stated during the media briefing that areas damaged by Cyclone Ditiwa remain vulnerable, with soil embankments continuing to erode and exposing large and medium-sized rocks. He warned that even a small amount of rainfall could cause those rocks to dislodge again. He further noted that signs of possible landslides continue to exist in several locations which had previously become inactive, and that these sites could become reactivated with future rainfall. Considering the prevailing rainfall conditions, Level 1 landslide warnings have already been issued for the Passara Divisional Secretariat Division in the Badulla District, as well as the Badalkumbura and Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Monaragala District, he added. “Residents near reservoirs should remain vigilant” – Irrigation Department Chief Engineer of the Hydrology Division of the Irrigation Department, Chamara Yapa Arachchi, stated that the department’s Disaster Management and Hydrology Management divisions are maintaining close vigilance regarding possible disaster situations based on warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology. He said that nine major reservoirs and five medium-sized reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Department are currently spilling over. He further noted that water levels in rivers have shown some increase due to the recent rainfall, although they have not yet reached dangerous levels. However, he said water levels in the Kirindi Oya, Walawe, Deduru Oya, Malwathu Oya, Kelani and Kalu rive...
