Hon.Vijitha Herath has held high-level bilateral talks with Belarusian officials in Minsk as both countries moved to strengthen cooperation in trade, tourism, education, healthcare, and investment. The Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister met Maxim Ryzhenkov and senior officials during his official visit to Belarus. According to a government statement, the discussions resulted in the signing of an agreement and two Memoranda of Understanding aimed at expanding long-term bilateral cooperation. Following the discussions, both Foreign Ministers issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors. Addressing a joint media briefing in Minsk, Minister Herath stated: “Sri Lanka is open to exploring new avenues for cooperation with Belarus in multifaceted sectors, with a view to further strengthening our mutually beneficial cooperation, aligning with our national priorities.” The Minister also highlighted discussions on trade, investment, tourism, education, healthcare, and aviation connectivity. “In this context, I welcome the signing of the Air Services Agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Government of Belarus. Sri Lanka looks forward to materialization of regular flight operations by ‘Belavia’ to Sri Lanka,” he stated. The Minister added that improved connectivity could support tourism growth, business exchanges, and stronger people-to-people relations. Herath further noted that over 3,000 Sri Lankan students are currently studying in Belarus, particularly in the medical sector, while discussions were also held on pharmaceutical cooperation, affordable medicine supply, healthcare training, and Ayurveda collaboration.
