Sophie Devine sizzles in New Zealand's series-levelling win over ...
New Zealand Women bounced back strongly in the second T20I of the series, defeating England Women by 14 runs at the St Lawrence Ground to level the three-match series 1-1. After losing the opening game by seven wickets, the visitors produced a much-improved all-round display, led by Sophie Devine’s brilliant half-century and a clinical bowling effort in the second innings.Asked to bat first after winning the toss, New Zealand Women posted a competitive total of 170/5 in their 20 overs. The innings got off to a shaky start as Georgia Plimmer departed for a duck in the opening over, while Amelia Kerr also fell cheaply. England looked in control early on, but Devine completely shifted the momentum with a commanding innings under pressure.Sophie Devine and Maddy Green rescue New Zealand inningsDevine played one of her finest T20I knocks, smashing 87 runs off 57 deliveries, including five boundaries and six massive sixes. The pair stitched together a crucial partnership that frustrated England’s bowlers and laid the foundation for a strong finish. Brooke Halliday struggled to accelerate and managed only three runs, but the damage had already been done by the experienced duo.For England Women, Linsey Smith emerged as the standout bowler. The left-arm spinner picked up three wickets for 25 runs in her four-over spell and was instrumental in removing key batters. Lauren Bell also impressed with figures of 1/22 from her four overs, while the rest of the attack found it difficult to contain New Zealand’s middle order. Also READ: Skipper Amelia Kerr reveals why New Zealand are confident of defending Women’s T20 World Cup crownEngland’s chase falls short despite promising startsChasing 171 for victory, England Women began positively with Sophia Dunkley attacking from the outset. Poor England beaten as New Zealand level T20 series - BBC
England suffered a disappointing 14-run defeat as Sophie Devine's brilliance levelled the T20 series for New Zealand at Canterbury. England's bowlers started magnificently in scorching conditions, restricting New Zealand to 11-4, but Sophie Devine and Maddy Green added a record-breaking 159 for the fifth wicket to take the White Ferns to a competitive 170-5. All-rounder Devine blasted 87 from 57 balls before she was run out from the final ball of the innings, with Green finishing 56 not out in support. Devine hit six sixes and five fours as England's bowlers and fielders struggled under pressure in all-too-familiar scenes. Linsey Smith dominated the powerplay as she finished with 3-25, removing opener Georgia Plimmer and skipper Melie Kerr for first-ball ducks, but the stunning recovery gave New Zealand the momentum going into the second innings. Although England started their chase positively, Sophia Dunkley was the first to throw away her start and fell for 26 from 18 balls. After Alice Capsey was out for 22, Heather Knight and Maia Bouchier added 43 for the third wicket but their cautious approach led to the run-rate climbing and when the pair fell in consecutive balls in the 16th over, New Zealand were within touching distance of victory. Explosive all-rounders Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp were tasked with scoring 30 from the final two overs, but they were dismissed for 12 and 14 respectively as England finished on 156-6.The series decider takes place at Hove on Monday, when even hotter conditions are expected. New Zealand will be a team in transition at the end of this summer's T20 World Cup - when they will be defending their title - and veteran Devine showed exactly how big a gap she will leave in their batting line-up with one of her greatest knocks. In the tourists' poor start, Izzy Gaze was bowled by Lauren Bell in the first over, left-arm spinner Smith had Plimmer caught and bowled, and Kerr missed a sweep to be pinned lbw. Brooke Halliday was caught at long-off for three and England were in complete control at the end of the six-over powerplay with their opponents 29-4. But Devine used all of her experience to put the pressure back on England. She clubbed Charlie Dean for back-to-back sixes as England's captain was hit out of the attack by conceding 14 runs from her sole over. That meant all-rounders Kemp and Gibson had to bowl their full allocation, both conceding 34 from four wicketless overs, while Issy Wong went for 24 from her three. Devine flourishes ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
This win after a seven-wicket loss in the first T20I is a lift to New Zealand's preparations for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. With the tournament also being played in England, this win gives the team added confidence going in. New Zealand face-off against West Indies in Southampton on 13 June in their opening encounter of the T20 World Cup. Devine's run into form is important as the New Zealand stalwart has decided to retire from international cricket after the tournament is over, and would seek a second T20 World Cup title to sign off.
