2026 tech company layoffs - informationweek.com
This tracker follows significant layoffs in the tech and IT industry and the economic, technological and geopolitical factors influencing those layoffs. In 2025, layoffs shifted from correcting for over hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic to adjusting for macroeconomic pressures and increased AI adoption. Globally, nearly 245,000 tech jobs were cut in 2025, with about 70% of those layoffs stemming from U.S.-headquartered companies. In addition, AI was the cause of nearly 55,000 layoffs in the U.S. in 2025. On the heels of major headcount reductions by large tech companies including Intel, Microsoft, Amazon and Salesforce in 2025, Meta kicked off 2026 layoffs with a reduction of about 1,500 employees from its Reality Labs division. While Meta says its goal is to redirect investments toward AI research and development, AI is also expected to be a significant cause of layoffs this year. In 2026, 55% of 1,000 U.S. hiring managers surveyed by Resume.org said they expect layoffs, and 44% anticipate that AI will be a top driver of layoffs.Related:Tech company layoffs: The post-pandemic correction meets AI realignmentAI isn't the only concern when it comes to headcount reduction. The 2025 job market was shaken by President Donald Trump's fluctuating tariff policies, a reduction of a quarter million jobs within the U.S. government and a declining base of workers due to immigration policy. It's also a challenging time for entry-level workers, as the unemployment rate has risen more for younger workers than for older employees. InformationWeek will continue to monitor major tech layoffs — and the factors contributing to them — in this tracker, which will be updated regularly. Still, the company reported record revenue of $15.8 billion in its fiscal third quarter, a 12% increase year-over-year: "These results are even more impressive, given the complex environment we're operating in — a rapidly changing market, with intensifying competition, and a global shortage of components critical to support our portfolio and the AI buildout from our customers," said CEO Chuck Robbins in a blog post. He added that amid the layoffs, Cisco is prioritizing investment in "silicon, optics, security and in our employees' use of AI across the company."Robbins was expected to brin...

Dive Brief: Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian put out a call for engineers to populate an AI-focused unit inside the hyperscaler’s go-to-market team. “If you are a builder who wants to work on the world's largest stages and be at the center of the agentic era — join us,” Kurian said Tuesday on LinkedIn. The company cast a wide net for forward-deployed engineering talent as unemployment among tech professionals dipped, listing 59 distinct roles in the U.S. and locations abroad, including London, Paris and Hong Kong. In the New York and Atlanta areas, the company opened a dozen applied AI forward-deployed engineering positions with a base salary of $127,000 to $183,000. “This strategic expansion allows us to provide elite, hands-on Google engineers that move enterprises beyond experimentation into full-scale AI operations,” the company told Channel Dive via email. “Our recent $750 million commitment to our partner ecosystem further ensures this high-touch engineering model scales globally to meet unprecedented customer demand.” Dive Insight: The topsy-turvy tech talent market broadcast mixed signals as AI snipped away at jobs in some areas while driving demand elsewhere. In the wake of more than 1,100 Cloudflare layoffs that paralleled a 600% spike in AI usage by employees, Big Tech is bulking up on field-ready AI deployment experts. “We are investing in hiring additional forward-deployed engineers to help us scale customer AI transformation,” Kurian said in his post. “While having FDEs is not new for Google Cloud, the demand from customers and partners for Google enterprise AI products and Google engineers to help them embrace agent development is growing very rapidly.” The engineering push makes good on promises made last month during the annual Google Cloud Next conference. In addition to funding a partner-facing initiative to drive AI adoption, the company said it would provide several of its largest sys...
