PUCSL to announce decision on electricity tariff revision today

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) is set to announce a special electricity tariff revision for 2026 today (09). The National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd recently submitted a revised cost estimate for electricity generation for the second quarter of the year to the PUCSL, requesting a tariff increase citing higher fuel prices as the reason for rising generation costs. The public consultation period for submitting oral comments and suggestions on the proposed revision has now closed. The PUCSL has, however, confirmed that losses linked to the use of inferior coal will not be passed on to consumers through the tariff. Sri Lanka has already seen electricity prices rise this year. The PUCSL approved a tariff revision for the second quarter of 2026, which took effect from 1 April, raising tariffs by between 8% and 14.4% depending on the category of consumer.
