Police trace young women in viral unsafe motorcycle - Newswire
An investigation has been launched into a viral social media video showing three young women travelling unsafely on a motorcycle without protective helmets. According to the Police, the video circulated widely on social media in recent days, prompting the Sri Lanka Police to initiate investigations through the Buttala Police Station. Investigations led to the identification of the registered owner of the motorcycle, the rider, and the two other young women who were travelling on the vehicle. They are residents of Kolombugala, Hidikivula and Unawatuna areas. Police further revealed that the 23-year-old rider did not possess a valid driving licence. Accordingly, the rider is scheduled to be produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (May 11) on charges of riding without a valid driving licence, carrying two passengers without protective helmets, transporting excess passengers, and reckless riding. The registered owner of the motorcycle is also due to be produced before court for permitting an unlicensed individual to operate the vehicle. By GMA Regional TV News Published May 06, 2026 5:25 PM A woman in Dumaguete City who was riding a motorcycle with her friend survived an attempt of another motorist to steal her bag.The incident happened in Barangay Bagacay where a CCTV camera captured the moment the suspect on board another motorcycle pull beside the motorcycle ridden by the victim, Pearl Abuso, and tried to grab her bag.Abuso was riding pillion while her female companion was driving the motorcycle.The suspect failed on the first try but made a second attempt, which led to a struggle that caused Abuso’s motorcycle to lose balance and fall to the ground.Despite the crash, the suspect still returned but Abuso managed to run away.The suspect then fled.“Nikalit ra siya’g tapad namo. Paglingi nako, iya mang gidirekta og labnit ang akong bag. Gatuo ko ga-joke ra siya kay hinay ra man pagkalabnit kay mag-drive man siya’g motor. Paglingi nako, seryoso naman siya’ng gabira, iya man gyud gibira mao tong misukol ko,” Abuso said.Abuso believes the suspect targeted her and may have waited in the area.Police have deployed additional personnel in the area to prevent a similar incident from happening.
