OpenAI may be teasing its next iPhone app launch with these clues

ChatGPT remains the top downloaded app on the App Store, and it sounds like OpenAI will launch a new iPhone app soon. OpenAI might be planning an iPhone version of its Codex app OpenAI has been investing heavily in its Codex desktop with updates arriving almost daily. Today’s release includes a new prompt that asks users one question: “What type of work do you do?” The feature adjusts the user interface for Codex based on the response. Options include engineering, product, finance, marketing, sales, operations, data science, design, student, and “something else.” This feature arrives as OpenAI looks to expand Codex’s appeal beyond agentic coding as a general productivity app. Building inside Codex allows the ChatGPT app to remain streamlined while offering a more capable solution for workflows. OpenAI could also be planning Codex remote control features from the ChatGPT app, but bringing a version of Codex to iOS would expand its reach beyond the desktop. If Codex is indeed a new iPhone app, it would be OpenAI’s third iOS app after Sora. The company discontinued the video generation social feed app in March. Earlier in the month, Codex gained the ability to use apps on the Mac without taking over the cursor. This means you can use Codex to run tasks on your Mac without giving up the ability to use your machine at the same time. In addition to enhancing the Codex desktop app, OpenAI recently introduced a subscription designed for Codex users. OpenAI also released GPT-5.5, upgrading the capabilities of ChatGPT and Codex, alongside Images 2 for image generation. Next, it sounds like OpenAI is planning an iPhone app that will act as a remote control for Codex on the Mac. These are the clues about what’s coming next: Claude Code has remote control which is amazing but has low rate limits.Codex has high rate limits but no remote control. How do I get the best of both worlds???— Tanishq Mathew Abraham, Ph.D. (@iScienceLuvr) April 30, 2026 No action required on your end to get the best of both worlds – give us a few days :)— Rohan Varma (@TheRohanVarma) April 30, 2026 thursday is for thinkingfriday is for fun👀— Andrew Ambrosino (@ajambrosino) April 30, 2026 Codex only arrived on the Mac in February, and soon an iPhone companion app could be ready to follow.
