iOS 26.5's Apple Maps app has two notable changes, here's what's new
Apple Maps is one of several apps with new features in iOS 26.5, the latest iPhone update. Here’s what’s new for Maps users. #1: ‘Suggested Places’ feature in search screen One of my favorite new features in iOS 26.5 is the addition of ‘Suggested Places’ in Apple Maps. ‘Suggested Places’ adds two recommended places to Maps’ search screen every time you tap the search bar to perform a search. These recommendations are based on two main factors: What’s trending nearby Your recent search history Suggested Places tend to refresh often—in my experience nearly every time I open the search screen. So if you’re looking for spots near you, the two recommendations will be based in your local area. But if you’re planning a vacation to New York City, and just searched for something there, Apple Maps will offer two NY-based recommendations instead. #2: Ads support ahead of summer launch If you’re running iOS 26.5 in the US and Canada, your iPhone will alert you about its support for another Apple Maps change: ads. Ads haven’t officially launched yet in Apple Maps. Apple previously said they would launch this summer. However, iOS 26.5 introduces compatibility for the forthcoming rollout. And it notifies users via a new ads popup when Apple Maps is opened. Here’s what it says: Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search. For your privacy, advertising information is not linked to your Apple Account. Apple’s two-stage rollout is understandably confusing some users. For example, Polymarket told its 1.4 million followers on X: “Apple officially rolls out ads in Apple Maps.” Which isn’t technically true, but it’s hard to blame them since users who update to iOS 26.5 will be greeted by the ads popup in Maps. While the update may not dramatically change the user experience, it introduces several tweaks and bug fixes aimed at making everyday tasks seamless. One of the key highlights is an easier transfer process for users switching from Android devices, further simplifying Apple’s push to attract new iPhone users. The update is also expected to bring enhancements to Apple Maps, including smarter navigation tools and refinements designed to improve usability. “This update introduces end-to-end encrypted RCS (beta) messaging and a downloadable Pride Luminance wallpaper, along with enhancements, bug fixes, and security updates for your iPhone,” Apple said in a blogpost. Here’s what users can expect from the upcoming software release. End-to-end RCS encryption Apple first introduced E2EE for RCS between iPhones and Android devices in the iOS 26.4 beta, but later pulled it from the stable build. E2EE ensures messages between supported iOS and Android devices stay private. Only the sender and recipient can read them, excluding any third party. Suggested Places in Apple Maps It recommends places using a user’s location and recent searches. The update lets US and Canadian businesses run ads in maps search results and at the top of Suggested Places. New wallpapers and improved Android transferring options iOS 26.5 adds easier pairing for Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse with iPhone or iPad. Plug in via USB-C once, and the accessory stays connected wirelessly as you use it. The update also includes new customisable wallpapers from the 2026 Pride Collection. Users can also choose 12 colours from a palette of 75 to create a personalised theme. Another addition is iPhone-to-Android data transfer. Building on iOS 26.4’s improvements with Google, iOS 26.5 lets users move message attachments by time range, for example, last year, last 30 days or everything. Looking forward, Apple is set to announce iOS 27 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 on June 8. The first developer beta version is expected...
