Mujibur tears into Gammanpila over Easter attack book
SJB MP Mujibur Rahman on Saturday criticised former minister Udaya Gammanpila over his recent book on the Easter Sunday attacks, saying it was an attempt to mislead the public and revive a “bankrupt politics” around the tragedy. Speaking at a media briefing, Rahman said there was no dispute that Zahran Hashim and his group carried out the Easter Sunday bombings, but stressed that the real question remained who had supported, protected and enabled them to carry out the attacks. He said for years, several figures involved in investigations and public discussion had pointed to the possibility of a wider conspiracy and the involvement of individuals beyond the suicide bombers themselves. Rahman alleged that Gammanpila’s book lacked credibility because he had appeared as a lawyer for former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, who is now under investigation, and therefore could not be viewed as an independent or neutral writer on the matter. He further claimed that the book largely reflected Sallay’s own account, rather than presenting new facts uncovered through any independent inquiry. Rahman also questioned what he described as contradictions within the same political camp, noting that different figures had named different people as the alleged “mastermind” behind the Easter attacks. He accused certain political actors of trying to use the Easter Sunday tragedy once again to push racist and religiously divisive politics back into public debate. Calling on the government to act with greater transparency, Rahman urged authorities to make all volumes of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry report available to the public, instead of restricting access. He also repeated calls for ongoing court proceedings and investigations linked to the Easter Sunday attacks to be conducted openly, saying secrecy only created space for speculation and political manipulation. Rahman said the public had given the current government a mandate to identify those who planned and supported the Easter attacks, and urged it to ensure all responsible parties are brought before the law.
