MIT Facing “A Real Drop In Research” Says Its President - Forbes

MIT President Sally Kornbluth announced Thursday that, along with a substantial drop in research, the Institute could see a decline of as many as 500 graduate students in the upcoming year. All rights reserved.MIT President Sally Kornbluth acknowledged on Thursday that the Institute is facing a “striking loss” in research funding and is also likely to see a dramatic drop in graduate student enrollment.Kornbluth delivered the sobering news in a video message, in which she pointed to large reductions in federal funding, an increased tax — now at 8% — on the institution’s endowment, and the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies as the major factors contributing to MIT’s growing financial challenges.According to Kornbluth, compared to last year, the Institute has seen a more than 20% decline in campus research funded by federal awards. In addition, the number of new federal research grants awarded to MIT investigators is also down more than 20%. Although non-federal sources have helped make up for some of the lost dollars, they are not large enough to compensate for the federal cutbacks. As a result, MIT’s sponsored-research activity from federal and non-federal sources is now 10% smaller than it was a year ago. "That is a striking loss for one of the most influential and productive research communities in the world," said Kornbluth. Those funding losses are directly tied to a second problem — a disruption to MIT’s talent pipeline. Kornbluth said that, in addition to the federal funding losses, administrators are seeing “clear signs that policy changes affecting international students, and scholars are discouraging extremely talented individuals from applying to join our community.”MORE FOR YOUMIT’s graduate student enrollment decreased this year, and Kornbluth expects that trend to continue. As MIT nears the end of the admissions cycle for next fall, academic program leaders have grown hesitant to admit new graduate students because faculty cannot be certain they will have the grant funds necessary to support them. Not counting MIT’s Sloan School of Management and the Masters of Engineering program, which are still in the process of admitting students, MIT’s new graduate enrollments for next year are down close to 20%. That means that in total, outside of Sloan, the Institute could enroll about 500 fewer graduate students.Kornbluth said she felt that the worst impact of the financia...
