April 1, 2026 at 12:24 AM Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of the 61-year-old gem businessman in Kahawatta, following investigations into his disappearance. The suspect was taken into custody while hiding in a forested area by officers of the Delwala Police after a search operation carried out by multiple special police teams. The suspect is a resident of Kahawatta Kanda. The investigation began after a complaint was lodged on Sunday (29) reporting the businessman missing. Initial inquiries revealed that the victim had travelled on a motorcycle along the Kahawatta–Nilagama road on Saturday (28) prior to his disappearance. His motorcycle was later found abandoned near a bend along the same road, while his mobile phone was recovered from a nearby tea estate. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of his body in a mining pit on Monday (30). (NewsWire) 2026-04-01
