Maradana Railway Station reopened upgraded passenger facilities today after the successful completion of the first phase of its renovation project. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Bimal Rathnayake on April 26. The project is part of the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme and the wider “Sihinaya Gamananthaya” initiative aimed at modernising 100 railway stations across the country. It was carried out through a joint effort involving the Sri Lanka Railways, private sector partners and civil organisations. Around Rs. 35 million was spent on the first phase, which was fully sponsored by Akbar Brothers. Renovation work was completed over six months under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology. Upgrades completed under the first phase include CCTV systems, new lighting, improved sanitary facilities with modern fittings, interior and exterior repainting, and landscaping. Authorities also fully restored the roof of the station building, which is over 100 years old and had not undergone major repairs for decades. Long-standing water leakage issues were addressed, while more than 2,000 square feet of the upper concrete roof was waterproofed. Officials said further phases of the renovation are planned for the station, which serves as a key transport hub connecting passengers to all parts of the island. (Newswire) 2026-04-25
