2 arrested in Maradana for hoarding diesel - Sri Lanka Mirror - Right ...

Colombo Additional Magistrate Oshada Migara Mahaarachchi has ordered a suspect to be remanded until April 17 in connection with a massive fraud involving illegal access to the data system of National Development Bank (NDB). The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Computer Crimes Division arrested the suspect, a resident of Pottuvil, for his alleged involvement in defrauding Rs.390 million. Police informed the Court that the suspect had obtained Rs. 390 million from the private bank by providing cryptocurrency. Investigators told the Court that the funds circulated through an entity named “Buy Today” and stated that they are conducting further inquiries into the suspect’s bank accounts. Police further revealed that the primary suspect in this case served as Assistant Manager within the Department of Payments and Settlements. He allegedly carried out the fraud by using the passwords of two other officers. According to the police, three individuals, including an officer responsible for entering data into the bank’s accounts, are already in remand custody. Requesting the court to remand the suspect, the police argued that his release on bail could lead to witness tampering while the main investigation into the relevant accounts remains ongoing. Representing the suspect, the defence counsel moved for bail, stating that their client had obtained dollars related to cryptocurrency and had conducted the transactions in good faith. Magistrate Mahaarachchi rejected the bail application and ordered the suspect, identified as Mohamed Hassan of Pottuvil, to be remanded till April 17. (Excerpts : dailynews.lk)
