Large groundwater source discovered in Urubokka, easing drinking water ...
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said that it has discovered a large groundwater source in the Mananketiya area of Urubokka, offering a potential solution to the severe drinking water shortage affecting the area. The discovery was made yesterday (30), with officials stating that the discovered new source will help address the acute drinking water crisis faced by tens of thousands of residents within the Pasgoda Pradeshiya Sabha area in the Matara District. The residents of the area had raised concerns that water levels in Urubokka wells were depleting even during minor droughts, leading to drinking water shortages. They also alleged that water distribution through bowsers, typically used as a temporary relief measure, had not been adequately implemented this time. As a result, daily life in several areas, including Urubokka town, Dampahala Road, Hulankanda Road, Heegoda Road, Amuhengoda, Horagasmandiya, Katuwana Road and Keerapitiya Road, was severely disrupted. Moreover, the daily activities of Heegoda Hospital and schools in Hulankanda, Pattigala, Keerapitiya, Ginnaliya and Beralapanathara were also affected. According to the Pasgoda Pradeshiya Sabha, over 50,000 people from 10,000 families were impacted by the water shortage. In this context, the NWSDB’s Geologist in charge of the Southern Province, Indrajith Gamage, stated that it was possible to discover this large groundwater source upon a request made by the Pasgoda Pradeshiya Sabha.
Kalapahar residents battle 20-yr drinking water crisis in Guwahati ...
Guwahati, April 28: The 2019 UN World Water Development Report spelled access to safe, affordable and reliable drinking water as basic human rights, yet, in the heart of Guwahati, residents of Nilachal Nagar in the Kalapahar area continue to fight a daily battle for something as basic as water. Despite the government implementing several ambitious drinking water schemes worth crores of rupees for city residents, many localities in Guwahati still remain deprived of even a basic water supply. In Nilachal Nagar, the crisis has persisted for nearly two decades, forcing residents to depend entirely on purchased water for survival. Large sections of the locality are facing an acute shortage of drinking water, with residents saying they are left with no option but to buy water every few days. “Although we have various problems, the main issue is the water crisis. If we get water, it would feel like finding God because we have been suffering from this problem for the past 20 years. We have been buying water for our daily use,” said a resident. For many families, especially those from low-income backgrounds, the financial burden has become unbearable. Hasina Begum, another resident, said the area has been suffering from severe water scarcity for nearly two decades. “It’s been 15 to 20 years now that we have been suffering through the acute water crisis. Earlier, we had tubewells, but now the construction of huge buildings has aggravated the shortage. The area we live in is hilly and all the tube wells have dried up,” she said. She added that since many families earlier depended on tube wells, they did not initially opt for supply water connections. “Now, we have applied for JICA supply water but haven’t received any till today. The pipelines have been cut off due to bridge construction. There are seven members in our family, including small children. We can buy water for two to three days, but we are not wealthy enough to keep buying water every day for years,” she said. Residents said they have been suffering from the crisis for the last 15 to 20 years and have repeatedly approached the concerned departmental authorities, but no permanent solution has been provided so far. Although JICA water pipelines were once installed in the area, the supply never reached many households. Residents alleged that during the construction of the Cycle Factory–Lalganesh connecting flyover, the pipelines were removed, leaving little hope for restoration. As a result, most families no...
