Japan PM Takaichi arrives in Vietnam to discuss energy supply cooperation
Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has arrived in Vietnam's capital Hanoi for her five-day tour of the country and Australia. The tour is aimed at securing stable supplies of energy and critical materials. Before heading to Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Friday, she said cooperation is vital to beef up supply chains in Asia amid tensions in the Middle East. On Saturday, she is scheduled to meet Vietnam's President and General Secretary of the Communist Party To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung. They are expected to affirm stronger cooperation to secure oil-derived medical products and energy supply. She will also deliver a speech at a Vietnamese university on Japan's foreign policy, including the concept of a free and open Indo-Pacific proposed 10 years ago by then Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. She will likely also touch on expanding the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, as well as improving coast guard capabilities and other security cooperation. On Monday, she will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Preparations are underway for a joint declaration on economic security that is likely to spell out cooperation aimed at stabilizing supplies of liquefied natural gas and critical resources.
