Lok Sabha to vote on Constitution Amendment Bill for 33% women's quota and Delimitation Bill. INDIA bloc MPs meet to finalize floor strategy amid opposition concerns. New Delhi, April 17The INDIA bloc MPs are scheduled to hold a meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's chamber in Parliament at 10 am on Friday to chalk out the strategy for the Floor of the House. This comes as Lok Sabha today is set to continue discussion and vote on the passage of the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, which provides 33 per cent reservation to women in Parliament and State Assemblies, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 extending it to Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, and the Delimitation Bill, which is set to increase and redraw Lok Sabha constituencies, increasing them up to 850.Earlier on Thursday, the Lok Sabha held a marathon 12-hour session to discuss the amendments to the women's reservation bill, which removes the need to implement the bill only after the census is conducted. As per the final division, there were a total of 251 AYES and 185 NOES out of the total 333 votes. With the 251 AYES majority, all three Bills, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Delimitation Bill, 2026, were introduced in the Lok Sabha.Multiple leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, discussed the bill. Multiple Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, and Congress leader KC Venugopal, also participated in the discussion. The Opposition MPs raised concern over the constitutional amendment, to conduct the delimitation and increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha to 850, based on the 2011 census. The opposition alleged that the proposed legislation would shrink the representation of southern states in the House.Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged the Centre to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, reserving one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha, on the basis of the current 543 seats. KC Venugopal referred to the Bills as a move to "sabotage democracy."However, Union Minister Amit Shah assured that the representation of the southern states would not be affected by delimitation.Presenting numbers, Shah noted, "If we listen to the entire narrative created for the South, then out of the 543 seats created by you, 129 MPs currently sit in this House, which is approximate...
India: Parliament votes on women's quota amid opposition row
India's parliament is set for a Friday vote on a crucial stack of three bills that could expand the size of the legislative body to increase the representation of women lawmakers. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday proposed the amendment bills in a special session of the Parliament, aimed at bringing forward the implementation of a 2023 law guaranteeing a 33% quota for women in the national Parliament and state assemblies from the 2029 general elections. The women's quota is tied to a separate and controversial bill to redraw voting boundaries based on population under the Delimitation Bill. The opposition has accused Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of using the women's quota issue as a ploy to secure more votes ahead of the 2029 polls. It has also questioned the government's intentions behind linking the quota with the redrawing of voting boundaries based on census. On Thursday, the parliament saw a marathon 12-hour debate on the bills with both Modi and the opposition taking jabs at each other. What are the three bills being considered in the Indian Parliament? The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026 proposes increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, from 543 to around 850, comprising 815 members from the states and 35 from the Union Territories. The Delimitation Bill, 2026 establishes a Delimitation Commission tasked with altering seat allocations in Parliament and state assemblies based on the most recent population census — held in 2011 — and redrawing constituency boundaries accordingly. At present, the 1971 census defines the composition of the Lok Sabha. The 84th Amendment Act of 2001 froze constituency boundaries until the first census after 2026. The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 works in tandem with the first two bills to extend the one-third quota for women to the legislative assemblies of Union Territories, including Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Puducherry.World's largest census underway in IndiaTo view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Opposition cries foul over delimitation In essence, the women's quota has broad cross-party support. But opposition parties are concerned that a population-based redistribution of seats would tip the scales in favor of the BJP, which has a large support base in the densely populated northern states.
