Health Experts Urge Mandatory Medical Support for New Year Festivals

The National Institute of Sports Science (NISS) has stressed the importance of making first aid and medical services compulsory at Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivals, citing the current high temperatures across the country. Dr. Dhammika Senanayake highlighted that participants in outdoor activities such as marathons and cycling events face an increased risk of health issues when exposed to intense sunlight, and emphasized the need for organizers to take appropriate safety measures. He explained that temperatures in Sri Lanka are currently exceeding 30°C, and when combined with high humidity levels, the likelihood of heat-related illnesses during outdoor events rises significantly. According to Dr. Senanayake, caution is advised when the heat index is between 27°C and 32°C, while additional precautions are necessary when it ranges from 32°C to 41°C. If the heat index surpasses 41°C, engaging in outdoor physical activities can be hazardous. He urged organizers to carefully plan events with these conditions in mind and implement steps to limit participants’ exposure to excessive heat. For large-scale New Year celebrations, he emphasized the need to ensure the availability of first aid and medical services, as well as to notify nearby hospitals in advance to guarantee adequate emergency response. Additionally, he recommended that physically demanding events such as marathons and cycling races be scheduled earlier in the day and completed swiftly to reduce the risk of heat-related complications.
