Animal lovers suggest national plan on firecracker risks
News View(s): By Kasun Warakapitiya Animal rights activists say it is high time the Government set up a national action plan and raise awareness about potential harms to animals from New Year fireworks. They pointed out that animals suffer from shock and stress as well as hearing disabilities due to firecrackers. We Are for the Animals, president Sewwandi Perera told the Sunday Times people should be allowed to only use certain varieties of fireworks to avoid sound pollution. She said that after the new year, every year pet owners post social media messages about lost pets. So these pet owners should be responsible and secure their animals in enclosed areas and provide a calm environment. The Sunday Times observed that most animal welfare organisations as well as animal rights activists have been rescuing street dogs and cats and feeding community dogs and cats. A veterinary surgeon working with the veterinary surgeon at the Pinnawala Zoo, Dr Kithmini Dunuwila explained how firecrackers contribute to hearing damage and badly affect household pets and birds. She explained that firecrackers produce impulses often within 140-170 decibels, and has the capability of causing mechanical damage to the eardrum in extreme cases. More commonly it damages hair cells in “cochlea” (inner ear), the hair cells do not regenerate, and the damage is permanent, she said. Dr Dunuwila explained dogs and cats have hi...
