SOLUM shakes hands on new grocery retail partnership with food ...

SOLUM, a retail technology solutions provider, and Gander, a food waste reduction tech specialist, have announced a partnership that aims to help grocery retailers simplify markdowns on short-dated products. The tie up brings together Gander’s expiry-based pricing intelligence with SOLUM’s Newton electronic shelf labels (ESLs) and Aims SaaS platform. The integrated solution will be unveiled next week at Retail Technology Show 2026 (RTS) in London, showcasing how retailers can bring together expiry driven pricing decisions and real‑time shelf‑edge updates within day‑to‑day retail operations.Gander’s technology identifies short‑dated products and automatically applies optimised, rule‑based markdowns based on retailer defined parameters. It also gives retailers clear visibility of waste performance, compliance, and sell‑through rates, while promoting reduced‑to‑clear products across multiple consumer facing channels to help accelerate demand. Integrated with SOLUM’s Newton platform, expiry led pricing decisions are automatically synchronised and displayed on shelf-edge labels in real-time. The result, those involved claim, is a connected workflow linking centralised pricing logic, expiry intelligence and shelf-edge execution, reducing errors, improving consistency and easing the operational burden on store teams.Stacey Williams, Gander Business Development Director, says: “Through our partnership with SOLUM, grocery retailers can turn every markdown decision into instant, accurate shelf-edge execution. By combining Gander’s real-time optimisation and demand activation with SOLUM’s ESL infrastructure, retailers improve sell-through, protect margin, and reduce food waste, all without adding operational complexity in store.”  Mark Duckworth, Country Manager UK & Ireland at SOLUM, adds: “As increasing numbers of large UK grocery retailers adopt our ESL solutions based on proven quality and trust, open collaboration with ecosystem partners like Gander represents an important step forward. Through these partnerships, we are able to deliver sustainability driven solutions that genuinely reflect the evolving needs of both the market and our customers.”2026 RTIH Innovation AwardsGreen retail will be a key focus area at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards. The awards are now open for entries and celebrate global retail technology innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world. Our winners will be revealed at the 2026 RTIH Innovation Awards Ceremony, taking place at The HAC in ...

4 Ways Grocers are Winning Market Share & Boosting Margins by ...

Although most retailer grocers calculate their food waste below 15%, the reality is they are typically wasting between 35% - 40% of their fresh products when comparing inventory delivered to inventory sold. The cause of this alarming undercalculation can mainly be attributed to outdated forecasting methods and waste management challenges that have long plagued the industry. While excessive food waste is bad for business — costing the grocery industry more than $50 billion in lost profits annually — it’s also bad for our planet. The environmental cost of retail food waste that goes unaddressed equates to 30 million acres of cropland and 4.2 trillion gallons of water, according to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service. These points may paint a daunting picture for the industry, but the future of retail and how it tackles food waste is bright. This is because some major grocery chains are placing big bets on sustainability efforts that have the potential to take a significant bite out of food waste while boosting profits. Below are 4 ways leading retailers are using innovative approaches to materially reduce food waste, improve margins, and enhance the shopper experience: 1. Supply chain transformationKroger is working at the nexus of food waste, hunger, and waste diversion. Through its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste program, the company plans to reach zero food waste by 2025. This includes transforming logistics, urging partners to reduce waste, investing in hunger intervention for families, and shifting wasted food from landfills to other recycling methods or industrial uses. The company has already said its total food waste has decreased by 13%, while the food waste diversion rate has improved by nearly 18%.2. Improved merchandising and auditingTarget has transformed its replenishment strategy to significantly reduce food waste. In the company’s 2020 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, Target outlined numerous plans to align with climate science, a key pillar behind its intention to invest in new methods and technologies that ensure its stores don’t hold more food than they expect to sell. Through novel forecasting, ordering tools, merchandising solutions, and offering guests discounts on food close to expiration, Target is positioned to significantly reduce food waste and grow its fresh food margins.3.
