Special presidential commission to probe all coal shipments since 2009
April 10, 2026 06:30 pm A Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry will be appointed to investigate all coal shipments imported to the country since 2009, says Leader of the House Minister Bimal Ratnayake. Speaking in Parliament this evening (10), during the debate on the no-confidence motion brought by the opposition against the Minister of Energy, he said that the presidential commission will be headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge. AG: Coal procurement full of irregularities - The Island
Despite the availability of alternative verification methods, the Lanka Coal Company failed to use them to confirm the accuracy of the reports. The audit also highlighted that no coal shipments were brought to Sri Lanka between November 13 and December 30, 2025, despite the need to secure maximum stocks during that period.
The coal may not be perfect but the procurement is, says Govt.
Potencia is registered in Dubai but has Sri Lankan owners. This was facilitated by LCC based on line ministry directives, guidance from Sri Lanka's Attorney General's Department and recommendations by a special Cabinet Subcommittee. Cabinet subsequently approved the novation of responsibility to Potencia LLC on March 18, 2024.
