Google Photos adds touch-up tools for 'quick, subtle' selfie fixes
If you’re on Android, Google Photos is probably your go-to way for managing your images and videos, backing those memories up to the cloud, and making edits while on the move. With its latest update, Google is looking to bring retouching tools to your selfies, all while trying to do so in a way the brand keeps referring to as “subtle.” As announced on the company’s blog today, Google Photos’ image editor now supports touch-up tools that should bring “subtle enhancements” to either selfies or photos of your friends. You can smooth out your skin texture, remove blemishes, brighten your eyes for a more eye-catching look (pun intended, sorry), and whiten your teeth. To use, select a face in a captured image, then select heal, smooth, under eyes, irises, teeth, eyebrows, or lips from the tools list. Each effect has an intensity slider to allow yourself to move between extremes. Unsurprisingly, the language used in Google’s post today attempts to downplay the potential harms that can be associated with retouching, particularly when it comes to how it’s used within the worlds of, say, fashion and modeling. It’s also launching at a time where lots of parents feel frustrated over how social media impacts their teenaged children, with Google having lost a lawsuit last month over the role YouTube has played in these issues. Still, if you’re looking to use these options, they’re coming to the Photos app on your phone very soon. This update is rolling out to global users “gradually,” though you’ll need a device running Android 9.0 and with at least 4GB of RAM to actually make use of these tools. Google Photos Debuts AI Touch-Up Tools - iPhone in Canada
Google has officially expanded its suite of AI touch-up tools to all Google Photos users. Whether you are on an iPhone or an Android device, features like Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur are now right at your fingertips. For years, these tools served as a primary selling point for the Google Pixel lineup. Now, the company is bringing these professional-grade capabilities to the masses, allowing anyone with a compatible device to fix their memories with just a few taps. Using generative AI, the Magic Eraser tool identifies distractions in your images and suggests things you might want to remove. You can also manually circle or brush over an object to make it disappear. The AI then intelligently fills in the gap, blending the textures and lighting so seamlessly that it looks like the distraction was never there in the first place. Another standout feature now widely available is Photo Unblur. This tool is a lifesaver for those slightly shaky shots or older, sentimental photos that lack clarity. It uses machine learning to reduce blur and visual noise, sharpening the image to bring out fine details. It is particularly effective for portraits where the subject’s face might be a bit soft, ensuring your most important memories stay crisp and clear. For more complex transformations, Google has introduced Magic Editor to a broader audience. While Magic Eraser removes things, Magic Editor allows you to completely reimagine a photo. You can reposition a person in the frame, resize objects, or even change the colour of the sky from a gloomy grey to a vibrant sunset. t is important to note that while many tools are now unlimited, Magic Editor comes with a small catch for non-Pixel or non-subscribing users. Those on standard Android and iOS devices will receive 10 Magic Editor “saves” per month. To get unlimited saves, users still need a Pixel device or a Google One premium plan (2TB or higher).
