'Gemini Spark' is Google's upcoming AI agent in the Gemini app

In the ramp up to I/O 2026, Google has been working on adding a more advanced agent capability to the Gemini app. It now looks like it will be branded as “Gemini Spark.” About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on. Google app beta version 17.23 today introduces the “Gemini Spark” name after previously referring to it as “Gemini Agent.” Its icon is literally Gemini’s spark with momentum, like a comet. (This is the second week in a row that Google has released two beta releases in the same week: 17.22 and 17.23.) The more you use Gemini Spark, the better it understands you and what you want to accomplish. Behind the scenes, Gemini Spark will use “your info from sources like Connected Apps, skills, chats, tasks, websites you’re logged into, Personal Intelligence, location, and more.” Additionally, Gemini Spark can “share necessary info with third parties” as needed to accomplish the task: “This could include your name, contact information, files, preferences, and info you might find sensitive.” Google makes clear that “Gemini Spark is experimental.” “While it is designed to ask for your permission before taking sensitive actions, it may do things like share your info or make purchases without asking. Make sure to supervise Gemini Spark, and don’t rely on it for medical advice, legal, financial, or other professional help.” Meanwhile, Spark is already appearing for some testers. As part of the redesigned app, “Spark” will appear in the updated navigation drawer. This launches a two-tab layout split between “Chat” and “Agent.” You create new tasks in Spark with a list of active ones and those that are scheduled to run at specified times. Example capabilities include: Declutter your inbox: Summarize or archive newsletters and unsubscribe from emails lists Get meeting briefs: Get concise overviews and relevant info before important meetings Get a custom news digest: Go deep on the stories you care about and follow how they evol...

What is Gemini Intelligence? Google brings AI agents to Android phones

Google is doubling down on agentic AI to improve Android users’ on-device experiences by embedding Gemini deeper into the products that people use every day.The tech giant on Tuesday, May 12, introduced Gemini Intelligence, an AI agent-based operating layer designed to read a user’s screen, move across apps, and autonomously complete tasks that would otherwise require users to jump between multiple platforms. The announcement was made at The Android Show 2026, a precursor to Google’s I/O developer conference next week, where the company previewed the latest Android version, including AI-powered app automation, smarter version of Chrome on Android, new tools for creators, new security features, and a revamped Android Auto experience. With Gemini Intelligence, Google is moving beyond traditional chatbot-style assistants toward autonomous AI agents. While AI agents are not new, their adoption is still in the nascent stages. Gemini Intelligence could potentially mark a turning point for the mainstream adoption of AI agents, especially in India where over 97 per cent of all smartphones are powered by Android. Gemini Intelligence’s debut comes a month before Apple is expected to unveil a revamped Apple Intelligence, reportedly powered by Gemini itself, at WWDC 2026. It highlights Google’s massive advantage in consumer AI owing to its vast distribution network. However, rivals such as OpenAI are also reportedly eyeing smartphones with AI agents at the core. “We’re transforming Android from an operating system into an intelligence system. This means deeply understanding the context, anticipating your needs, and getting things done on your behalf,” Sameer Samat, the president of the Android Ecosystem at Google, said during the keynote presentation on Tuesday. How Gemini Intelligence will work At the launch, Google revealed little about Gemini Intelligence under the hood, including how it was developed or which large language models (LLMs) power its agentic AI capabilities. However, the tech giant mentioned that it spent months fine-tuning the multi-step task automation capabilities of Gemini Intelligence using popular food and rideshare apps on Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 devices.Story continues below this ad Task automation allows Gemini to use certain apps on a user’s behalf. For instance, users can ask Gemini to look at the guest list for a barbecue, build a menu, add ingredients to an Instacart list, and return for approval before checkout. Another example is asking...
