Funeral attack in Kisumu leaves four injured as police arrest three ...
Tension and fear have engulfed Kisumu County after unknown assailants stormed a funeral gathering and left four mourners injured in a violent attack. The incident occurred at 2:09 a.m. in Kamgan village, Kadianga area, Upper Nyakach division. According to preliminary reports, the attackers descended on the mourners armed with sharp weapons, stabbing several people before fleeing with livestock and mobile phones. One victim is in critical condition and was rushed to Kisumu County Referral Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Nyabondo Mission Hospital. Among those injured is 18 year old Raphson Acholla, who was struck with an arrow in the back. Others include Gordon Ouma, 38, who sustained facial injuries from a blunt object, and Remjius Oyugi, 31, alongside Silvans Onyango, 31, who were both hit in the face. The three are currently admitted at Nyabondo Mission Hospital. Following the attack, the matter was reported to Maraboi Police Station. Security officers, working closely with community members under the leadership of Nyakach Deputy County Commissioner Orina Dawin, launched a manhunt for the suspects believed to be livestock thieves. The operation led to the arrest of three suspects at Sondu market, where stolen property was recovered, including ten sheep, one black calf, ripe bananas, and household items. The suspects, identified as Solomon Onyango, 36, from Koguta; Frank Otieno, 26, from Urudi; and Charles Abongo, 35, from Nyamaroka, are currently being held at Maraboi Police Station as investigations continue. Deputy Commissioner Dawin urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities. “We are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice. I call upon the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activities,” he said. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the attack, calling for enhanced security measures. “We cannot live in fear every day. Funerals should be moments of mourning and unity, not violence,” said one villager. Another resident added, “The government must act quickly to ensure our safety. These attacks are unacceptable.” The incident has reignited debate over rising insecurity in rural parts of Kisumu, with community leaders urging for stronger policing and community vigilance to prevent further tragedies.
