Iyad Abu Jarad, who oversees the crew, said he receives 10 to 15 phone calls a day from desperate families begging for help recovering the remains of their loved ones. But there is only one functioning excavator in Gaza available for body recoveries, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. "The scale of the need is so high. One functioning excavator is simply not enough," said Pat Griffiths, a Red Cross spokesman. He said a second digging machine was recently repaired and will be put to use in the coming weeks.
