As Europe’s population continues to age, the need for innovative, inclusive, and effective healthcare solutions has never been more urgent. As Europe’s population continues to age, the need for innovative, inclusive, and effective healthcare solutions has never been more urgent. Dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are on the rise, bringing with them not only cognitive challenges but also physical ones, particularly impairments in gait and balance that significantly increase the risk of falls. The GaitXR project, Enhancing Dementia Care: Integrating XR Technology for Gait Training and Mobility Improvement in Elderly Populations, emerges as a forward-thinking response to this challenge. Funded under the Erasmus+ programme, this 30-month initiative (2024–2027) aims to bridge healthcare training, digital innovation, and inclusive education to improve both professional practice and patient outcomes. What is GaitXR about? At its core, GaitXR is about transforming how healthcare professionals are trained to support elderly individuals living with early-stage dementia. The project has three key objectives:Develop an Extended Reality (XR) tool for gait training and fall preventionCreate an Educational Programme Manual tailored to healthcare professionalsTrain and upskill professionals while piloting the tool with elderly populationsBy combining immersive technology with evidence-based care practices, GaitXR introduces a new way of learning, one that is interactive, practical, and directly applicable to real-world healthcare settings. What makes this approach particularly powerful is its focus on hands-on, experiential learning. Through XR environments, healthcare professionals can practice gait training techniques in safe, controlled, and adaptable scenarios, enhancing both confidence and competence. Why does it matter?Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and reduced independence among older adults, especially those with dementia. At the same time, there is a recognised gap in specialised training for healthcare professionals working with this population.GaitXR addresses both issues simultaneously by:Improving mobility and quality of life for elderly individualsEnhancing digital and clinical skills among healthcare professionalsSupporting inclusive, accessible vocational education and training (VET)Importantly, the project aligns with key European priorities, including digital transformation, inclusion, and innovation in education and training.
