News Any importer can bring alternative rice from India – Minister Wasantha Published 2 hours agoon April 5, 2026 Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development – Wasantha Samarasinghe, has stated that any importer is permitted to bring in substitute rice from India to address the current shortage of Keeri Samba in the local market. Accordingly, a single importer may bring in up to 1,040 metric tons of rice, the Minister told the ‘Mawbima’ newspaper. The approved substitute varieties are GR-11 and Kiri/Paal Ponni, with shipments allowed between April 02 and April 30. Meanwhile, the President has also issued a Gazette notification authorizing the import of these rice varieties. Minister Samarasinghe further noted that, in the event of shipping delays, the rice is expected to arrive at Sri Lankan ports by May 30 at the latest.
