Ilorin Court grants bail to two suspects accused of assault

Ilorin Court grants bail to two suspects accused of assault By Bode Ahmed An Ilorin Magistrate Court has granted bail to two suspects accused of assaulting medical personnel at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital. The defendants, Abdulsalam Hamzat and Adetunji Victoria, were arraigned on charges of criminal conspiracy, assault on public servants, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. Ruling on an oral bail application, the presiding Magistrate, M.G. Olujide, held that although the allegations are serious, they are not capital offences and are therefore bailable under the law. The court cited relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Kwara State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2018, in granting bail to the defendants in the sum of one hundred thousand naira each. Each of the defendants is to provide two sureties who must be responsiblle adults residing within the court’s jurisdiction and must submit affidavits of means. The court also ordered the defendants to write formal letters of apology to the complainants through the Chief Medical Director of the Kwara State General Hospital, along with written undertakings to maintain good conduct. Earlier, prosecution counsel, Barrister Mansurat Bello, had opposed the bail application, urging the court to consider the gravity of the allegations and the contents of the First Information Report. Speaking after the proceedings, Barrister Bello reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prosecuting the case to its logical conclusion, noting that it would serve as a deterrent against attacks on healthcare workers. Defence counsel, Barrister Toyin Mohammed Onaolapo, expressed confidence in the judicial process, saying both parties would have the opportunity to present their cases during trial. The case has been adjourned until the twenty-second of May for further hearing. END Continue Reading
