Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has instructed officials to implement development projects by focusing on the practical needs of the people. The Prime Minister made the remarks during the Colombo District Planning Committee meeting held yesterday (12) at the Colombo District Secretariat, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Division. The discussion mainly focused on development projects planned for 2026 and 2027, including rural road development, poverty alleviation and infrastructure improvements across the Colombo District. Officials stated that more than Rs. 195 million has been allocated under the Decentralized Budget Programme for 2026. Members of Parliament representing the district have already submitted project proposals under the programme. According to officials, 240 project proposals have so far been received through Divisional Secretaries, while approval has already been granted for 126 projects valued at Rs. 127 million. What do they discuss? The meeting also discussed road safety improvement projects within the district. Authorities noted that Rs. 100 million has been allocated to improve road safety, including the installation of safety barriers and traffic signboards in high-risk locations. In addition, plans have been prepared for 2027 to construct rural bridges and develop around 50 kilometres of roads with another allocation of Rs. 100 million. Meanwhile, officials stated that Rs. 1,036 million has been allocated for the “Praja Shakthi” poverty alleviation programme. The Prime Minister instructed officials to complete all related projects before 30 November 2026. Discussions were also held on developing school playgrounds with the support of the Ministry of Sports and implementing special projects under the Ministry of Buddhasasana and Environment. The meeting was attended by Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih, Colombo District officials, Members of Parliament, and other government representatives.
