Russian national dies after train collision at Kabalana level crossing

A 23-year-old Russian woman travelling on a motorcycle died after being struck by a special express train travelling from Beliatta to Colombo at the Kabalana railway crossing.Police state the incident occurred today (19) around 9:30 AM while the woman was crossing the tracks.Reports indicate that the light signals at the railway crossing were functional at the time of the occurrence.After the injured woman was brought to the Koggala railway station, a 1990 emergency ambulance crew conducted an examination and confirmed her death.The Habaraduwa sudden death inquirer performed a preliminary investigation and directed the remains to the Galle Karapitiya National Hospital morgue for an autopsy.Ahangama Police are conducting further investigations.

Alert Moratuwa resident averts railway derailment - TimesOnline

The actions of a resident in Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa helped to avoid a possible railway accident involving an office train on the southern coastal line today, the Railway Department said. The Sri Lanka railways said that the quick action of a person had led to the engine driver operating the Sagarika office train taking action and evading an accident today morning. The incident had occurred at Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa around 5.00 am today when a person who was walking near the rail track had witnessed a damage in one rail track. Thereafter the man who was aware that the morning train would arrive shortly swiftly acted to run further towards the direction the train would be arriving by waving a red cloth to signal the danger. The train was making its way towards the area at the time, and the engine driver had spotted the man had taken action to slow down and stop the train without incident. Railway officials commended the action of the man, as his timely and well thought action helped to ensure the safety of passengers and avoid a huge train accident which would have threatened the safety of passengers who travel to work.
