Last week, the platform came under scrutiny after reports highlighted the availability of “nudifying” apps, as well as a fake crypto wallet that allegedly stole more than $10 million. Brazilian government writes to Google, Apple over illegal betting apps
The Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) has written to Google and Apple after routine investigations discovered over 120 apps illegally offering gambling on the technology giants’ app stores. The Brazilian government said the apps were “easily found,” do not have age verification mechanisms and are “not even disguised under the guise of other functionalities.” It said search terms such as “jogo do Tigrinho,” a Brazilian slang term for online slots reportedly based off PG Soft’s Tiger Fortune game, brought up the apps in the search results. Gaming apps not licensed in Brazil The MJSP said the apps in question promote, offer or facilitate access to fixed-odds betting and other forms of online gaming but are not licensed by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets. The apps are in breach of several articles of the Consumer Protection Code and the recently introduced ECA Digital - the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents – the MJSP said. It said the notified companies must provide “detailed explanations” of their internal policies regarding the provision of gambling and betting content and age verification, and provide an updated list of all applications under their operation that are available to Brazil, noting the developer, age rating and declared regulatory authorisation.
