AI From a Professor Of Political Philosophy - Terms of mind
By Dr. Liu Qing, and Muyao Y. Have you ever considered looking at AI through a philosophical perspective? Has the thought ever crossed your mind? For me, it was a perspective I had never truly been able to dive into before, but was always an area of interest. Following this string of curiosity, I was able to have the honour of consulting political philosophy Professor Liu Qing with some of my questions, and being enlightened by his thought-provoking answers. I’m sure this article will leave you, the reader, with many new interpretations of concepts and ideas. Professor Liu Qing has a Ph.D. in Political Science, at the University of Minnesota, USA. His primary research areas are political philosophy and intellectual history. His publications include Lectures on Modern Western Thought (2021), Great Reversal: Intellectual Trends in the West since 2000 (2021), The Undetermined Moment: Modernity and Western Thought (2006). He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Brown University in 2007, a Senior Visiting Scholar at the University of Queensland in 2017, and a Harvard-Yenching Visiting Scholar in 2023. Honors include: selected as one of GQ Magazine’s Men of the Year 2021 (“Voice of Reason”); named Robb Report’s Person of the Year 2022; awarded the First Phoenix Book Review Prize – Critic of the Year 2022; and recognized as Thinker of the Year 2024 in Southern Weekly’s “Annual List of Social Values in China.” Q: From a philosophical perspective, what do you think this industrial revolution can bring for humankind? On this view, technology itself is value-neutral: it is neither good nor bad, and can be used either for good or for evil depending on how human beings choose to use it. This idea is very popular, and it is often called instrumentalism in the philosophy of technology. From a philosophical point of view, however, this is a rather naive and one-sided way of understanding technology. As early as ancient Greece, Plato raised this issue in the Phaedrus. There is a famous story in which an Egyptian inventor, Theuth, presents his inventions—including writing, measurement, and calculation—to King Thamus. Theuth claims that writing is a remedy that will make people wiser and strengthen their memory. But Thamus replies that writing is not a medicine for m...

Silicon Valley and The Question of Technology
A little history is in order. This world started to come into being with The Scientific Revolution in the 17th century. The rationalism of medieval scholasticism was replaced by the empiricism of Copernicus, Galileo and ultimately Newton. Francis Bacon articulated the modern vision in Novum Organum (1620) in which our increasing knowledge of nature would lead to our mastery of it via technology.
