Australia will on Saturday commit to replacing its World War II-era ANZAC-class warships with Japanese-designed Mogami-class frigates under a deal worth billions.NewsWire understands Defence Minister Richard Marles will ink the deal with his Japanese counterpart in Melbourne eight months after Mitsubishi Heavy Industries beat a German bid.Under the agreement, initially costing taxpayers $10bn, the Japanese shipbuilder will produce 11 Mogamis for the Navy.Three frigates will be built in Japan and the remaining eight built at Western Australia’s Henderson Defence Precinct.Australia is expected to get its first Japanese-built Mogami by 2029 and its third by 2034.If delivered on time, which the Japanese have given assurances on, the new fleet will be the fastest defence acquisition of its size in Australian history.In a speech on Thursday, Mr Marles hailed the imminent deal as part of “the most ambitious modernisation of Australia’s maritime capability since the Second World War”.The total end cost of the agreement remains unknown.More to come.
