Aravinda de Silva and wife testify at Kapila Chandrasena's death inquest

An inquest into the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena was held before the Fort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death. Kapila Chandrasena, who had been named a key suspect in the alleged acceptance of a US$2 million bribe linked to the Airbus aircraft procurement deal, was found dead earlier this month.During the proceedings, the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) submitted a further report on the ongoing investigation along with two annexures related to the post-mortem examination.Eight witnesses appeared before the court to provide evidence, including former Sri Lankan cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife, who are relatives of the deceased.Investigators told court that several medications and multiple blood samples recovered from the scene had been taken into custody as evidence. The Magistrate questioned whether a belt found around the victim’s neck and unidentified medication discovered at the location had been forwarded to the Government Analyst for examination.Responding to the inquiry, CCD officers stated that the belt, suspected to have been used in the hanging, would be sent to the Government Analyst on Tuesday, while steps were also being taken to submit the medication for forensic analysis.Investigators further revealed that Chandrasena’s mobile phone is a high-security device and efforts are underway to gain access to its contents through a specialized institution.Giving evidence before the court, Priyangi Anushka Wijenayake, the sister of Chandrasena’s wife and spouse of Aravinda de Silva, stated that she had no suspicions regarding the death.Further investigations are continuing under the supervision of the Colombo Crimes Division.
